Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of February 17th –February 23rd, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Men’s Basketball:

The men’s basketball team lost to Nebraska 80-67 in Lincoln on the 20th. Both DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier scored 17 points each to lead the Nittany Lions. Penn State hosts Ohio State on the 27th in its next contest.

Player of the Week: Tim Frazier, senior, guard. The Houston, Tx., native scored 17 points, dished out 5 assists and grabbed four rebounds against Nebraska.

Stat of the Week: Penn State and Nebraska combined for 51 fouls.

Women’s Basketball:

The women’s basketball team defeated Northwestern 82-73 on the 20th. Senior guard Maggie Lucas led the way with 26 points while junior center Tori Waldner set a career-high with 14 points. Penn State takes on Nebraska on the 24th as it looks to clinch its third straight Big Ten championship.

Player of the Week: Maggie Lucas, senior, guard. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year scored at least 25 points for the third straight game in the win over Northwestern.

Stat of the Week: Lucas made her 517th career free throw attempt in the win over Northwestern to set a new program record.

Wrestling:

The wrestling team defeated Clarion 43-3 on Senior Day in the final dual meet of the regular season. Ed Ruth, David Taylor, Morgan McIntosh and Mathew Brown all won their respective matches via pin. No. 1 Penn State is off until the first round of the Big Ten championships beginning on March 8th.

Men’s Ice Hockey:

The men’s ice hockey team defeated Michigan 5-4 in overtime on the 21st before falling to the Wolverines 5-2 the following day. Forwards Casey Bailey and David Goodwin each notched a pair of goals in Penn State’s victory over the Wolverines. The Lions take the ice against Minnesota on the 28th in their next game.

Player of the Week: David Goodwin, freshman, forward. The Des Peres, Mo., native scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, against Michigan.

Stat of the Week: Bailey scored his second goal with five seconds left to force overtime in the match up on the 21st.

Women’s Ice Hockey:

The women’s ice hockey team dropped both of its games to Robert Morris this past week, losing 5-2 on the 21st and 4-0 the following day. The series with Robert Morris concludes regular season play with the Lions going 4-27-3 (1-18-1 CHA) during the year. The CHA Tournament kicks off on the 28th with Penn State taking on RIT in round one.

Player of the Week: Laura Bowman, freshman, forward. The Minnetonka, Minn., native scored her team-leading tenth goal against Robert Morris on the 21st.

Stat of the Week: Penn State posted a 0-10-1 mark in its last 11 games.

Men’s Volleyball:

The men’s volleyball team swept both of its opponents this week, beating Sacred Heart 3-0 on the 21st and Harvard the falling day. The victory over Harvard moves Penn State to 5-0 in the EIVA. Harvard is in second place with a 4-1 record. Penn State hits the road for its next contest when it takes on Princeton on the 28th.

Player of the Week: Aaron Russell, junior, outside hitter. The 2013 EIVA Player of the Year had a match-high 16 kills in the victory over Sacred Heart.

Stat of the Week: Penn State has now swept six straight opponents.

Baseball:

The baseball team defeated Gardner-Webb 4-3 in 10 innings on the 17th before falling to USF 19-1 on the 21st and 11-7 on the 22nd. Penn State finishes its series with the Bulls later today and those wishing to get updates on the game should visit GoPSUSports.com for updates and results.

Player of the Week: Steve Snyder, redshirt senior, outfield. The West Chester, Pa., native had two hits and scored a pair of runs in the 11-7 loss to USF.

Stat of the Week: Penn State committed six errors that led to nine unearned runs in the 19-1 loss to USF.

Softball:

The softball team competed in a double header against No. 21 LSU on the 17th, losing the first game 11-3 in five innings and then winning the second game 6-5 in the final day of the Tiger Invitational. Penn State competed in the FAU Tournament from the 21st-23rd, losing all five games. The Lions lost to No. 5 Kentucky 5-0 and FAU 3-2 in eight innings on the 21st, Pitt 3-1 and Florida Atlantic 3-2 on the 22nd and then No. 5 Kentucky 8-1 on the final day. Penn State looks to rebound in its next game when the Lions take on Kent State on March 1st in the JMU Tournament.

Player of the Week: Marlaina Laubach, freshman, pitcher. The Northampton, Pa., native earned the victory over LSU on the 17th to claim her fourth victory of the season.

Stat of the Week: Laubach now has four complete games on the year.

Men’s Lacrosse:

The men’s lacrosse team upset No. 4 Notre Dame 8-7 on the 22nd in South Bend. Senior Shane Sturgis had a six-point effort against the Fighting Irish. The Lions take on Ohio State on March 1st in their next outing.

Women’s Lacrosse:

The women’s lacrosse team beat Bucknell 21-9 on the 19th before losing to Maryland 14-7 on the 22nd. Junior Tatum Coffey had five goals and sophomore Jenna Mosketti had four goals in the Lions’ 21-9 victory over Bucknell. Penn State hosts Duquesne on the 25th in its next outing.

Men’s Gymnastics:

The men’s gymnastics team competed in the Winter Cup Challenge on the 20th and the 22nd from Las Vegas. No team score was given but junior Craig Hernandez earned the individual title on the pommel horse. Penn State hosts Minnesota on March 1st in its next contest.

Women’s Gymnastics:

The women’s gymnastics team claimed the first place finish in the quad meet against Rutgers, Temple and Ursinus on the 22nd. Junior Sidney Sanabria-Robles placed first in the vault. Penn State has another quad meet against Western Michigan, Yale and Bridgeport on the 28th for its next contest.

Fencing:

The men’s and women’s fencing teams competed in the final day of the Junior Olympics on the 17th. Both teams dominated the Temple Invitational on the 22nd, with the men going 4-0 on the day and the women posting a 3-1 mark. Penn State competes in the US Collegiate Team Competition from Princeton, N.J., later today.

Track and Field:

The track and field team competed against Notre Dame in the Alex Wilson Invitational on the 22nd in the final meet of indoor season. Penn State competes in the Big Ten championships beginning on the 28th in its next meet.

Women’s swimming and diving:

The women’s swimming and diving team competed in the Big Ten Championships from the 19th-22nd, posting a third place finish overall. Sophomore Alyson Ackman and senior Mackenzie Powers earned first team All-Big Ten selections. The Women’s Last Chance event will be held on March 2nd.

Men’s Tennis:

The men’s tennis team defeated Penn 5-2 on the 22nd in its only match of the week. With the victory, Penn State moves to 10-0 on the season in what has become its best start in program history. The Lions will look to keep the streak alive when they travel to Ohio State on March 2nd.

Women’s Golf:

The women’s golf team competed in the second day of the Central District Invitational but not the first day due to inclement weather. Penn State returns to the course in the first day of the Kiawah Island Invitational on March 2nd.
