Hobey Baker Watch: Week 16
The announcement of the Hobey Baker Award winner is slowly creeping up on us. There are just 78 days remaining until the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee announces the recipient. In this week’s watch, let's dive into a few forwards who could challenge the favorite, Providence’s Jack Dugan
Tyce Thompson, Providence
Thompson, a teammate of Dugan, has produced some impressive numbers throughout his sophomore year. In 25 games, Thompson has produced 17 goals and 11 assists for 37 points. Thompson’s ability to score in the clutch has especially stood out this year, as he’s capitalized on the man advantage with six power-play goals as well as three game-winning goals. A smooth two-way skater with a touch for finding the net, Thompson is a player that New Jersey Devils fans should keep their eye on as one of the team’s two fourth-round picks from the 2019 NHL draft.
Jordan Kawaguchi, North Dakota
The undrafted native of Abbotsford, British Columbia, has turned some heads in his junior year. Ranking among the top players in college hockey for both assists and game-winning goals, Kawaguchi has generated 12 goals, 23 assists and 35 points through 21 games, alongside a plus/minus of plus-19. Kawaguchi possesses great vision and instinct on the ice. He’s an improved player who isn’t afraid of taking shots or assisting his teammates, and that has North Dakota primed for yet another national championship run.
Marc Michaelis, Minnesota State
The once-young German freshman Michaelis has now transitioned into the role of captain of the top team in the WCHA. Now, the senior has become one of the very best collegiate players, scoring 16 goals, 17 assists and 33 points through 25 games. On top of that, Michaelis is one of the best two-dimensional offensive players, ranking in the top three for short-handed points, short-handed goals and point-scoring in the WCHA. Michaelis is currently dealing with an apparent leg injury, but when he returns to the ice, you can be sure to see an energized captain ready to lead his team to a national championship.
