While their Penn State classmates traveled home for Thanksgiving last month, the Nittany Lions baseball team became the first college players to compete in Cuba since the restoration of diplomatic ties this year.

“It’s a tremendous educational opportunity at a critical time,” said John Nichols, Professor Emeritus of Communications and International Affairs. He has been visiting Cuba since 1971 and returned their with the team. He said baseball holds a special place in Cuban sports culture.

“Taking the track team to Cuba would be a big deal. Or taking the baseball team to Mexico would be a big deal, but taking the baseball team to Cuba is a really big deal,” he said.

Eight student journalists accompanied the team on the historic trip. Despite the challenge of finding Internet service in Cuba, they documented the experience in text, images and video. They also called all three games for the ComRadio audience back in the United State. Here is their report.
