STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — As the chicken sandwich debate rages on between Popeyes and Chick-fil-A, State College is throwing its hat in the ring with Pablo’s Chicken.

Downtown’s newest restaurant officially opened Friday on Calder Way beside Bagel Crust, offering free samples to anyone who stopped by.

Owner Uriel Rusinque says since Thursday night’s soft opening and today’s official opening, the restaurant has been a hit.

“We ran out of everything. We sold out,” Rusinque said. “It was great that the people loved it. Great comments so far.”

Rusinque owns Pablo’s Chicken, as well as the Bagel Crust on Calder Way and Beaver Avenue. He says most of the menu items are homemade, but deciding his favorite food is a challenge.

“That’s a tough question,” Rusinque said. “I got a crispy bite, I loved it. Then I went for a piece of fried chicken, I loved it. This afternoon I just got a Pablo’s sandwich, fried chicken, and that was outstanding.”

Pablo’s offers several chicken sandwiches with homemade side dishes and dressings ranging from chipotle mayo and honey mustard to ranch and barbeque sauce. The classic chicken sandwich combo costs $7 and can be grilled or crispy. It also comes with a side and drink.
