Music Brings Back Memories for Elderly

Judith Sherwood, a music therapist as well as a musician and a composer, visits several nursing homes in State College on a monthly base. Her therapy sessions are designed to help the senior residents overcome memory challenges.

The songs Sherwood plays in her sessions are mostly from the early 20th century. According to Sherwood, music back then can evoke positive feelings and long-term memories of the senior residents.

"If I can do that, then my living is not in vain," Sherwood said. She said herself has suffered depression, and music helped to recollect her faith in life.
