ESPN’s Emily Kaplan Speaks on Sports Journalism at Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — ESPN’s Emily Kaplan spoke about her experience in sports journalism in the Sparks Building at Penn State on Monday.
Kaplan discussed her career path and the steps she took after graduating from Penn State. She worked as a staff writer at Sports Illustrated, covering the NFL alongside Peter King. She decided to leave Sports Illustrated to cover the NHL at ESPN.
Kaplan spoke to students and gave them advice on the field of sports journalism.
“Think creatively, a little bit different,” Kaplan said. “It feels really good to take risks and see those risks through.”
Kaplan is known for her unconventional style of covering hockey in an attempt to grow the sports audience and to differentiate her reporting from others in hockey media.
Senior Austin Boley was in attendance and thought very highly of Kaplan’s speech.
“It was a great speech,” Boley said. “A lot of valuable information came out of it, and it was nice to see somebody from ESPN, someone with a lot of credibility, coming out and talking to us”.
