Week Eight Heisman Watch

Story posted October 26, 2015 in CommRadio, Sports by Abhar Shah

As we approach the latter part of the season, it’s becoming pretty clear who the obvious favorite to win the award this year is. With a handful of players in the mix, Leonard Fournette is the clear frontrunner, but he’s closely followed by a bunch of very talented players.

Leonard Fournette (RB, LSU)
Stats: 1,352 yards on 7.7 yards per carry and 15 touchdowns.
Last week standing: 1

Fournette’s been number one on almost everyone’s Heisman prediction. The sophomore is playing on another level this season and he continues to impress anyone who watches him. He continued his streak of rushing for at least 150 yards against Western Kentucky. Fournette pretty much won the award already and barring any injuries, this year’s Heisman will go to this running back.

Fournette will have a bye week this week and then face his biggest challenge next week as LSU travels to Alabama.

Trevone Boykin (QB, TCU)
Stats: 166-250 for 2,359 yards, 25 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
Last week standing: 2

Boykin was a favorite to win the award coming into this season and he’s delivered. Although he isn’t highly sought after at the next level, Boykin is putting up very impressive numbers. The senior can not only throw the ball, but he’s been getting it done on the ground as well rushing for 440 yards and five touchdowns. If not for Fournette, Boykin would be a clear favorite to win the award.

TCU will be taking on West Virginia this week after coming off a bye week.

Corey Coleman (WR, Baylor)
Stats: 47 receptions for 18 touchdowns on 20.5 yards per reception.
Last week standing: 3

Anytime a receiver makes the list you know he’s having a great year. Coleman keeps showing us why he’s truly a special player. Last week, he caught the rock six times for 85 yards and two touchdowns and while some may say that it wasn’t Coleman’s best game, keep in mind that Baylor lost their quarterback before halftime to a neck injury. Coleman also saw his streak of 100+ receiving yards per game end, but he continued his touchdown streak.

Baylor will have a bye week but will take on Kansas State on November 5th.

Ezekiel Elliot (RB, Ohio State)
Stats: 1,130 yards on 6.8 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns.
Last week standing: Honorable mention

There was an Elliot sighting this past week as Ohio State ran all over Rutgers. Elliot was a big part of that as he ran the ball 19 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Elliot was another favorite going into this season, but saw his stock drop as Ohio State’s offense struggled. Most of the struggle was due to the quarterback rotation, but Elliott has ran for more than 100 yards every game this year and has been very consistent for Ohio State.

Ohio State will take on Minnesota November 7th after a bye week.

Honorable Mentions:
Derrick Henry (RB for Alabama)
Seth Russell (QB for Baylor)
Dalvin Cook (RB for FSU)
