Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of January 13th to January 19th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Men’s Basketball:

The men’s basketball team lost both of its games this past week, losing to Michigan 80-67 on the 14th, and to Purdue by a score of 65-64 on the 18th. Guards Tim Frazier and DJ Newbill each scored 17 points each in the loss to Michigan. Newbill added 17 points and 10 rebounds in the one-point loss to Purdue on the 18th. The Nittany Lions will try to grab their first conference win when they host Nebraska on the 23rd.

Player of the Week: Tim Frazier, senior, guard. The Houston, TX, native scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss to Purdue.

Stat of the Week: The Lions are now 0-6 in the Big Ten to begin the season.

Women’s Basketball:

Women’s basketball defeated Big Ten rival Ohio State 66-42 on the 16th. Senior guard Maggie Lucas scored 18 points in the victory. Penn State’s defense held Ohio State to its lowest point total of the season in the victory.

Player of the Week: Ariel Edwards, senior, guard/forward. The Elmont NY. native had 13 points and 10 rebounds to record her third career double-double.

Stat of the Week: The Penn State defense forced 22 turnovers in the win over Ohio State.

Men’s Ice Hockey:

The men’s ice hockey team lost all three of its games this week, losing to Minnesota 5-2 on the 13th, 3-0 to Michigan State on the 17th, and once again to Michigan State on the 18th, by a score of 3-2. Eric Scheid and Taylor Holstrom scored the goals for the Lions in the 3-2 loss on the 18th. Penn State has a break from Big Ten competition in its next game when it takes on Boston College on the 25th.

Player of the Week: Curtis Loik, sophomore, forward. The North Vancouver, B.C., native recorded his first multi-point game in the 5-2 loss to the Gophers on the 13th.

Stat of the Week: Despite losing 3-0 to Michigan State on the 17th, the Lions outshot the Spartans 48-29.

Men’s Volleyball:

Men’s volleyball won both of its matches this week, defeating IPFW 3-0 on the 17th and Ball State 3-1 on the 18th. Junior Aaron Russell recorded a double-double against IPFW, logging 12

kills and 10 digs. Peter Russell had 14 kills in the win over Ball State. Penn State is off until the 31st when it hosts Mount Olive.

Player of the Week: Aaron Russell, junior. The preseason All-American selection registered a season-high 21 kills in the win over Ball State.

Stat of the Week: The Russell brothers combined for 35 of Penn State’s 49 kills in the win over Ball State.

Wrestling:

The wrestling team defeated Indiana 36-6 on the 17th. The Lions won eight of the ten matches and rolled to the easy victory.

Fencing:

The men’s and women’s fencing teams competed in the NAC Division I, Juniors from the 17th to the 19th. The event continues on Monday the 20th.

Men’s Gymnastics:

The men’s gymnastics team took first place in the West Point Open team event on the 17th, grabbing a combined 428 points. At the West Point Open individual competition on the 18th, three Lions won their respective events – Ismael Sanabria (floor exercise), Matt Felleman (high bar), and Tristan Duverglas (vault). Penn State is off until the 25th when it competes in the Navy Open.

Women’s Gymnastics:

Women’s gymnastics won its quad meet against Cornell, Southeast Missouri State and UIC on the 18th. The Lions scored a combined 196 points en route to the first place finish. Eleven Penn Staters recorded personal bests in their respective events during the meet. Penn State is off until the 25th, when they takes on Michigan State.

Track:

The track and field team competed in the Nitany Lion Challenge on the 18th, with five Lions placing in the top five of the NCAA standings. Penn State is off until the 31st when it begins the first day of the two-day PSU National.

Swimming and Diving:

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed against Villanova on the 17th, with the men winning 191-96, and the women winning 166-118. The next meet for both teams will be on the 25th, against Navy.

Women’s Tennis:

The women’s tennis team won both of its matches on the 18th, defeating Cleveland State 5-2 and Bucknell 6-1.
