Penn State Sports Weekly Overview
The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of September 30th to October 6th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.
The football team lost to Indiana in its Big Ten opener on Saturday, by a score of 44-24. The loss to Indiana marked the first time in program history that it lost to the Hoosiers. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns for the Nittany Lions. Penn State looks to rebound next Saturday when they host Michigan under the lights at Beaver Stadium.
Player of the Week: Junior, WR, Allen Robinson. The wide receiver finished with 12 catches for 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Indiana.
Stat of the Week: Indiana had been 0-16 all-time against Penn State entering Saturday’s game.
The women’s volleyball team won both of its matches this week, defeating Indiana 3-0 on the October 3, and Purdue 3-2 on the 5th, to boost its conference record to 3-1. Leading the way for Penn State was sophomore, Megan Courtney, who tallied 15 kills against Indiana. The Nittany Lions continue Big Ten play for their next match when they host Minnesota on Wednesday, October 9th.
Player of the Week: Senior Deja McClendon. The Louisville, Ky., native had 13 kills against Indiana and 10 against Purdue.
Stat of the Week: Courtney had a career-high .750 attacking percentage against Indiana.
The men’s soccer team split its two games this week, by losing to Saint Francis 1-0 in double overtime on the 2nd and then defeating Indiana 2-0 on the 6th. Scoring the goals for Penn State were junior Owen Griffith and redshirt junior, Jordan Tyler. Penn State is off until Sunday, October 20th, when they travel to Michigan State, to take on the Spartans.
Player of the Week: Senior Grant Warming. The son of Penn State men’s soccer coach Bob Warming, the senior had a pair of assists in the win over Indiana.
Stat of the Week: Before Sunday’s victory, Penn State hadn’t won a game in Bloomington, Indiana, since 2005.
The women’s soccer team split its two games this week, defeating Wisconsin 2-1 on the 4th and losing to Minnesota 1-0 on the 6th. Senior Maya Hayes scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season in Penn State’s 2-1 win over Wisconsin. Penn State is off until Sunday, October 13th, when they continue Big Ten play against Michigan.
Player of the Week: Redshirt sophomore Britt Eckerstrom. The sophomore goalkeeper only allowed two goals this week for Penn State.
Stat of the Week: 9. With the win over Wisconsin, the Nittany Lions pushed their win streak to nine games, before it was snapped by Minnesota.
Women’s Ice Hockey:
The women’s ice hockey team began the season with a 3-3 tie against Vermont on the Friday, and a 4-2 win against the same Catamounts on Saturday. Sophomore Shannon Nicole Yoxheimer had three points for the Nittany Lions in the tie against Vermont. Penn State is off until Friday, October 11th, when they face off against Quinnipiac.
Player of the Week: Freshman Laura Bowman. The Minnetonka, Minn., native scored her first two collegiate goals in the 4-2 win over Vermont.
Stat of the Week: 37. Sophomore goaltender Celine Lee Whitlinger made 37 saves in the win over Vermont.
The field hockey team beat No. 10 Northwestern on the Saturday, in its only match of the past week. Scoring goals for Penn State were senior Brittany Grzywacz and junior Amanda Rose Dinunzio. Penn State is off until Friday, October 11th, when they host Ohio State.
Player of the Week: Redshirt junior Kylie Licata. The Mountain Top, Pa., native recorded her Big Ten leading fifth shutout of the season against Northwestern.
Stat of the Week: Penn State has now won seven matches in a row.
The cross country team competed in the Paul Short Run on Saturday, with the women’s team finishing ninth overall and the men finishing in the tenth spot. Leading the way for the women was junior Leigha Anderson who posted a 21:07 time while junior Matt Fischer had a 24:32 mark to lead the men. Penn State’s next competition is the Penn State National on Friday, October 18th.
The women’s tennis team competed in the Bulldog Invite from the 4th to the 6th. Senior Carmen Sandor had two singles victories on the 5th and the 6th for the Nittany Lions. Penn State is off until October 18th when they begin play in the ITA Atlantic Regional.
The Men’s Tennis team competed in the ITA All American Tournament from the 30th to the 6th. Some of the team members also competed in the UVA Fall Classic from the 4th to the 6th.
