UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — With a packed room mostly filled with engineering majors, Bob Hines gave a two hour long presentation highlighting his journey to becoming an astronaut.

Hines started with his upbringing and the detours he had along the way to at the end discussing what steps NASA plans on taking and how they plan to get there.

He also gave his advice to the students in attendance towards the end of the presentation when speaking about applying to be an astronaut.

“Don’t be like me like I was early on like there’s no way,” Hines said. “I would say if you are interested and it’s the kind of thing that you would enjoy doing then throw your hat in the ring. It’s never going to happen if you don’t apply.”

Hines also spoke about the different career paths he took before applying to NASA.

He was first selected to join NASA in 2017 after completing two years of training as an Astronaut Candidate. Hines is still awaiting his flight assignment.

The presentation was followed with a question and answer with the audience in attendance.
