Fantasy Football Trust or Bust: Week 12

Audio/Story posted November 22, 2019 in CommRadio, Sports by Matt Noah

Host Matt Noah with Zech Lambert, Ben Mooney, and Logan Bourandas recap the best and worst from Week 12 of the NFL and a look ahead from at what fantasy owners should be thinking about this week:

Week 11 has had a major impact on the playoff outlook for most fantasy leagues, and teams on the cusp of making the playoffs will need a win in the next couple weeks. Players like David Johnson, among others who were surefire superstars at the beginning of the season are no longer evenstartable options on your team. Let’s recap the best and worst of last week from heading into another week of fantasy:

Quarterbacks

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers: Garoppolo finished with 28 fantasy points setting a career high in passing yards with 424, tacking on four touchdowns. He led his team to a win over the Cardinals Sunday. Coach Shanahan put the ball in Garoppolo’s hand to shred the defense and he did just that. Without top receivers Geeorge Kittle and Emmanuel Sanders it makes the quarterback's performance that much more impressive.

Next week against a solid Packers defense, Jimmy Garoppolo is a borderline start with regression expected from last week.

Decision: BUST

Tom Brady, Patriots: Brady took an off-game against the Eagles following his bye week with only 216 yards passing and no other fantasy stats in a gutsy win Sunday. Finishing with eight fantasy points, many fantasy teams were let down expecting Brady to tear up a weak Eagles secondary.

The Patriots are still winning and Coach Belichick creates game plans to win, not maximize his fantasy relevant players. Next week against the Cowboys however, Brady should get back on track.

Decision: TRUST

Running Backs

Todd Gurley, Rams: Gurley took his season-high 25 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown, also catching three balls for 36 yards in Sunday win over Chicago. The RB showed he can handle a large workload with 19 PPR points after questions all season of injury concerns. Gurley was the top fantasy back last year but brokedown late in the postseason. He is startable and a high end RB2 next week on Monday Night Football against the Ravens.

Decision: TRUST

David Johnson, Cardinals: Johnson did absolutely nothing versus the 49ers other than finishing with zero points on zero touches. The player who was drafted in the first round of most fantasy drafts has had no impact fantasy wise since dealing with his ankle issues. Johnson is now the backup to Kenyan Drake since Arizona traded for the Dolphin at the trade deadline. After his bye this week, there is a chance Johnson will be healthy but he cannot be started until he shows he is the starting running back again.

Decision: BUST

Wide Receivers

John Brown, Bills: The leading fantasy receiver of the week finished with 34 PPR points, Brown caught nine passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The wide receiver reaped the benefits of Josh Allen’s amazing performance against the Dolphins. Brown is a consistent fantasy player who is a target monster with the potential to have a breakout game every now and then. He is a solid WR2 against a stingy Denver pass defense.

Decision: TRUST

Calvin Ridley, Falcons: Ridley caught all eight passes leading to a breakout performance of 143 yards and a touchdown in a win against the Panthers. He finished with 28 PPR points and his best fantasy game of the year. With Mohamed Sanu leaving town, Austin Hooper’s injury and Matt Ryan’s improvement has made Ridley the beneficiary. He has always been a top tier talent but had not been able to receive snap counts and targets in a crowded Falcons offense.

Now against the Buccaneers next week, Ridley will have a chance to replicate his performance.

Decision: TRUST
