Shaq Evans looking to make splash in NFL
Former UCLA wide receiver and current NFL Draft prospect Shaq Evans is looking to make a splash in the NFL. The standout Bruin, projected by many experts to be a late round pick, possesses good hands, great size and a competitive edge that would make any NFL team drool.
Evans, a two-time honorable mention All-Pac-12 honoree, says that his size and strength are his two biggest attributes. The 6-foot-1, 213-pound wide receiver, who transferred from Notre Dame in 2010, has the necessary explosiveness off of the line to excel at the next level.
“[My size is] one of my strengths,” said Evans. “I just make sure I maintain my explosiveness when I get off the line.”
A big reason for Evans' explosive development can be traced back to his position coach, Eric Yarber, who has taught a number of professional football players at the collegiate level.
“He’s helped me with a lot; just my technique,” said Evans. “He’s a detailed technician, so you take on the personality of your coach.”
At UCLA, Evans was required to learn how to play a multitude of wide receiver sets, including the “X,” “Z” and slot positions.
“I’m more suited to play on the outside, but I feel very comfortable at both, whether it’s inside or outside,” said Evans. “That’s going to make me more valuable because I can play multiple positions on the field.”
Evans, who has overcome shoulder surgery, said that his route running is an area that he wants to improve upon to be able to make an immediate impact in the NFL.
“You always can improve your routes,” said Evans. “I just want to become the best route runner the game has ever seen.”
The next level is always a difficult adjustment. For Evans, however, he’s just looking forward to not having to call his coaches “sir” anymore.
