Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of September 16^th to the 22^nd and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Football:

Penn State football defeated Kent State 34-0 in a rain-soaked game at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. Penn State (3-1) was led by running backs Akeel Lynch (14 carries, 123 yards) and Zach Zwinak (65 yards, 3 TDs). The Nittany Lions head into their bye week as they prepare for their Big Ten opener against Indiana on Oct. 5.

Player of the Week: RB Zach Zwinak: The bruising back tied his career-high with his three-touchdown effort against Kent State. It was his second consecutive three-touchdown performance.

Stat of the Week: 190. The defense allowed 190 total yards in its game against the Golden Flashes after allowing 507 in last week’s loss to Central Florida.

Men’s Golf:

The men’s golf team finished 6^th place overall at the Wolverine Intercollegiate that was played on Tuesday and Wednesday. Leading the way for Penn State was junior Jens Talbert, who finished in 8^th place and shot a 213 over the course of the tournament. The team began play at the Windon Memorial Classic on Sunday, and will play again on Monday for the second and final day of the tournament.

Player of the Week: Jens Talbert. The Little Rock, Ark., native led Penn State to a 6^th place finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate.

Stat of the Week: 68. Talbert’s second round score, which is a new career-best, single round score for the junior.

Men’s Soccer:

The men’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris 1-0 on Tuesday and Duquesne by the same 1-0 score on Sunday. Freshman Mark Wadid scored the lone goal in both of the contests. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton recorded the shutout in each of the matches. The team faces West Virginia on Sept. 25. for its next match.

Player of the Week: Freshman Mark Wadid. The native of Ontario, Canada, scored the winning goals, and only goals, for Penn State this week.

Stat of the Week: 3. The freshman Wadid now has three game-winning goals in his young career.

Field Hockey:

The field hockey team defeated Delaware 5-0 on Friday, Sept. 20. and Lafayette 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 22 to move its record to 5-3 on the year. Junior Taylor Herold had two goals against Delaware and redshirt junior Kylie Licata pitched the shutout in both games. Penn State plays

Player of the Week: Kylie Licata. The Mountain Top, Pa., native recorded a pair of shutouts this week for Penn State.

Stat of the Week: 4. The Lady Lions scored four second half goals in the 5-0 victory over Delaware.

Women’s Soccer:

The women’s soccer team beat Northwestern 3-2 in double overtime on Friday, Sept. 20. in its only game of the past week. The win moves Penn State’s record to 9-1 on the year. Junior Whitney Church had two goals to lead the Lady Lions. Penn State plays Purdue in its next match on Thursday.

Player of the Week: Whitney Church. The native of Ashburn, Va., had two goals against Northwestern to help give Penn State a come from behind win.

Stat of the Week: 11. The Lady Lions netted two goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Women’s Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team claimed the Penn State Classic title by defeating Albany, Eastern Kentucky and Yale all by the score of 3-0. The tournament was held on Friday Sept. 20. and Saturday, Sept. 21. Penn State takes on Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 27. in its Big Ten opener.

Player of the Week: Ariel Scott. The Penn State senior had a season-high 13 kills against Yale to seal the Penn State Classic title for the Lady Lions.

Stat of the Week: 9. Penn State has won all nine of its games this season by a 3-0 set score.

Women’s Golf:

The women’s golf team finished in 13^th place at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate that was played from Friday, Sept. 20. to Sunday, Sept. 22, with play on Saturday being cancelled. Penn State shot a 601 to finish 33 over par. Senior Ellen Ceresko finished tied for 46^th overall after shooting a 150 for the tournament. Penn State returns home for the Nittany Lion Invitational to be played from Friday, Sept. 27. to Sunday, Sept. 29.

Player of the Week: Ellen Ceresko. The Penn State senior had the best individual score for Penn State during the tournament and finished 8 over par.

Stat of the Week: 309. Penn State’s final round score of 309 was tied for the highest final round score of the tournament.

Women’s Tennis:

The women’s tennis team competed in the Cissie Leary Invitational from Friday, Sept. 20. to Sunday, Sept. 22 from Philadelphia, Pa. Senior Marie-Frederique Bedard won the back draw singles title and the back draw doubles title with teammate Carmen Sandor. The team will take a break from competition until the three-day Yale Invite beginning on Oct. 4.

Player of the Week: Senior Marie-Frederique Bedard. The native of Montreal, Canada won two titles this past weekend.

Stat of the Week: 10. Bedard defeated Yana Mavrina of Temple 10-5 in the third and final set of the back draw singles championship match.
