Hobey Baker Watch List Week Two

Story posted October 31, 2015 in CommRadio, Sports by Zach Green

Week two of the regular season has come to an end, and it’s time we look at how the early season Hobey Baker race is shaping up.

1. Jimmy Vesey (LW, Harvard)

Vesey and Harvard saw the puck drop on their opening night this past Saturday where they played New Brunswick to a 3-3 tie. Vesey scored the first goal of the season late in the first on the power play. Vesey took the pass from the faceoff and went all of the way around the defense and goaltender to score. Vesey would also get the assist on the third goal for the Crimson when he set up his teammate from behind the net. Vesey and Harvard continue their season when they have a home and home with Dartmouth on Halloween weekend.

2. Austin Plevy (C, UMass)

Plevy’s Minutemen fought back from being down 6-1 to tie their game against New Hampshire at 6-6. Plevy only had an assist in this game, moving his points total to eight on the young season. It is still too early in the year to see if the highly touted freshman’s blistering start is a fluke, or a sign of things to come. The Minutemen next take on Maine and either Princeton or Yale in the Capital City Classic this coming weekend.

3. Austin Ortega (F, Nebraska-Omaha)

Ortega picked up from his strong sophomore campaign, which saw him tally 37 points, with a quick start to this season. He currently leads the NCAA with seven goals and has two assists to add. Four of Ortega’s seven goals have been game winners as well. Only Jack Roslovic of Miami (Ohio) is close to him with three game winners. Next weekend, the Mavericks travel to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan in a weekend series.

Honorable Mentions:

Tyler Kelleher (RW, New Hampshire)

Dennis Kravchenko (F, UMass)

Travis St. Denis (F, Quinnipiac)
