UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - In honor of World Cancer Day and with THON quickly approaching, Penn State students gathered in the HUB Robeson Center to kick off the Cancer Cannot campaign today. The campaign, launched in 2016, encourages individuals to share why they fight to find a cure for cancer using the hashtag #CANCERCANNOT across social media platforms.

“Leading up until THON weekend, we are hoping that people post on their social media and think about all of the things that cancer cannot do, rather than the evil things that cancer can do,” THON public relations captain Jennie Worek said.

Many students took photos in front of gold balloons that displayed the signature hashtag. Students held their hands up to the camera to show their personal beliefs of what cancer cannot do written in Sharpie.

“I wrote cancer cannot corrode faith as a symbol that while cancer can cause such devastation and dark times, there is always hope and people that are fighting for you through THON,” THON Family Relations director Lizzy De Marshall said.

The campaign leaders say they hope this event raises awareness and support for all those effected in honor of World Cancer Day. THON 2019 is scheduled to kick off on Friday, February 15th.
