Hong Kong has seen political and social unrest in the past few years, and tensions are rising along the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border. An increase in "parallel trading," where individual mainland Chinese residents travel to Hong Kong to buy goods in bulk and then resell them across the border, has many Hong Kong residents angry. They're protesting the 180,000 daily trips made by the mainland shoppers, claiming they're ruining the region's identity and economic standing by creating shortages that inconvenience Hong Kongers who live in border neighborhoods and driving up prices.
