Sheamus Alcorn doesn't come from a musical family and has never taken any kind of instrument lesson. He's never played in a band or in front of a crowd, or even had the desire too.

But that doesn't mean music doesn't hold a special place in his life. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite.

After purchasing a ukulele while on a family vacation in Hawaii, Alcorn, a senior majoring in kinesiology, threw the island instrument in a closet and forgot about it.

Then he got to Penn State, and the stress of college life began to get to him.

Enter the ukulele from that trip to Hawaii.

When he found the instrument in his closet, he brought it up to State College with him. Now, when Alcorn has a long day, he sits on the roof of his North Allen St. house and strums the strings under the Happy Valley sunlight.

He's taught himself a few songs by watching YouTube videos, but he acknowledges that he's no maestro.

Alcorn says he doesn't have any desire to be a ukulele expert. For him, it's all about the calming melodies which he's learned to use as a shield against the daily stressors of his busy life.
