Craig Loston ready to be the next NFL-bound LSU DB

Story posted April 6, 2014 in NFL Draft by Ryan Stevens.

Craig Loston was regarded as the top defensive back in 2009 by numerous national recruiting outlets. The Aldine, TX native gave a verbal to Clemson only to flip his commitment to LSU later.

The hard-hitting safety is now being coveted again and things aren’t too different about the process.

“The only thing is back then you could choose where you wanted to go play ball at,” Loston said. “You’ve just got to be ready to go when you get that call.”

The rich tradition of LSU defensive backs in draft headlines is something else for Loston to factor in this time around. Patrick Peterson, Morris Claiborne, Tyrann Mathieu and his old safety partner, Eric Reid, are a few of the big names LSU has produced to go to the NFL.

“They know what type of player they’ll get and I don’t think anyone that’s come out of the LSU secondary in the previous years has let anyone down,” he said. “You can always count on those guys to work hard and do their job.”

The recruiting process is almost over for Loston. Teams such as the Colts, Falcons, 49ers, Rams, Panthers, Patriots and the Eagles have already reached out gauging interest in the two-time 2nd-team All-SEC selection.

To Loston, the uncertainty is the hardest part of waiting for the draft to start

“It’s kind of hard because you can talk to these guys and you just never know,” Loston said.

Loston’s confidence to be an asset to an NFL team seems to be what he’s hoping teams will buy into come early May.

“You’ll get a guy that understands what he’s doing and a hard worker,” Loston said. “And also a guy that’s ready to work for a team before himself.”
