Tame Impala - Currents B-Sides & Remixes EP Review

Story posted November 27, 2017 in Arts & Entertainment by Jack Grossman.

Tame Impala’s release has come as a bit of a surprise to some, but not to others. Kevin Parker is always looking to improve and create new music and there is no doubt that he has crafted something new and unique with this EP. Currents, released in 2015, is Tame Impala’s venture into the pop region of music, while maintaining the original psychedelic rock that they’ve had since the start. It was a wonderful album and these B-Sides are no different. Keeping with the pop psychedelic theme, Kevin Parker has again crafted songs that are both funky, poppy and a tiny bit trippy.

Though the collection is only 28 minutes long, they did not disappoint. Each new song is breathed with life and creativity from Parker, while maintaining trademark Tame Impala features such as a chaotic atmosphere and melancholy lyrics. “List of People (To Try and Forget About)” is no exception as it is a staple Tame Impala piece, complete with reverb on the vocals, careful mixing and a small hint of white noise. “Powerlines,” the second track, while instrumental, is one of their best. It evokes a euphoric feeling within the listener, while getting gradually more intense with the sound. It is a classic track that is quintessential Tame Impala. The third original track, “Taxi’s Here,” is reminiscent of some of the latter half of Currents. It fits perfectly within the lineup, with the same gritty feel and innovative sound of the previous tracks.

The final two tracks are remixes of “Reality in Motion” and “Let it Happen,” though they are made with a new flavorful style of club-like beats and funky rhythm. It does not take away the original vibe from the songs, but rather makes them a unique variant of each of them.

Overall, while it is a very short EP, it is a collection that turned out to be one of the more surprising favorites of this year. It offers the fresh, unique sound of Tame Impala that scratches the itch. Until they release a new album, this is an excellent placeholder.
