Player Spotlight: Kevin Kerr
When Kevin Kerr limped off the ice in Penn State hockey’s preseason game against Queens, any avid fan felt their heart start pounding a little harder.
Kerr is a returning starter on defense and was supposed to be one of the leaders on the ice this season. Fortunately, Kerr’s injury was not significant and he was able to start both games against Saint Lawrence. Fans who knew the significance of his presence on the ice are surely familiar with his outstanding freshman season.
He was partnered on the defensive end with senior Luke Juha. This pairing became a dominate force for the Nittany Lions from squelching any opponent attacks to leading the offensive push at the other end.
Kerr finished his freshman campaign with three goals and 14 assists for a total of 17 points on the year. He also finished the year with an impressive +10 rating which was fourth on the team. The most telling statistic however was his 46 blocked shots. Juha was the only Nittany Lion with more, finishing with a whopping 68 in his senior year. This is an area where Kerr will have to continue to improve.
He also has a new defensive partner with whom he has solid chemistry. While he is only a sophomore, Kerr is one of the more veteran players this year for Penn State hockey. A loaded freshman class has arrived on campus and will be sure to get lots of ice time. Kerr will need to keep a steady hand and transform into the leader of the defensive unit.
Behind Kerr is the always important goaltender position, this year filled by freshman Peyton Jones. Jones is loaded with talent but struggled in game two against Saint Lawrence giving up three goals in the first five minutes.
As Big Ten play approaches, the man between the pipes has to have confidence and it will be Kerr’s job to give him protection and guidance as the season progresses. While Kerr certainly has some large skates to fill, he is absolutely fit for the job.
