Hobey Baker Watch: Week 11

Story posted January 24, 2018 in CommRadio, Sports by Josh Starr

As regular season play winds down and conference tournaments loom, the best of the best in college hockey rise to the top. Here are my top three candidates for the Hobey Baker Award.

Henrik Borgström, F, Denver

Borgström is heating up at the perfect time for Denver as conference play nears its end. He has eight points in his last three games, including back to back three point outings. On the season, he has compiled 35 points in 23 games to lead the team. Denver will need Borgström to step up and play well in the NCHC tournament and beyond. He has been there and done that last year as a freshman, helping the Pioneers to a National Championship, and will undoubtedly be a contributor for them down the stretch this year.

Tanner Laczynski, F, Ohio State

Laczynski has taken over as the Buckeyes leading scorer, a position Mason Jobst held last season after tallying 55 points. Laczynski has eclipsed his point total from a year ago with plenty of hockey left to play. He currently has 34 points on 11 goals and 23 assists. With Ohio State striving to make a run deep in the Big Ten tournament and earn a bid in the NCAA tournament, Laczynski has plenty of time to add points to his ledger that already has him tied for third in the nation in scoring.

Dylan Sikura, F, Northeastern

The senior forward from Northeastern leads the nation with 1.62 points per game. With a goal and three assists his last time out against Massachusetts, Sikura brought himself within two points of his teammate, Adam Gaudette, who sits atop the nation’s scoring list. Impressively, Sikura has these numbers despite playing in three fewer games than Gaudette. Sikura posted 57 points in 38 games a year ago and with 10 games to go in the regular season and a few more in the postseason, Sikura should be able to come close to that number again this year.
