Week Ten Heisman Watch
A week full of upsets and horrible officiating is behind us, and while some Heisman favorites experienced defeat, others kept shining under pressure. With that being said, let’s get into this week’s Heisman favorites.
Leonard Fournette (RB,LSU)
Stats: 1,383 yards on 7.1 yards per carry and 16 touchdowns.
Last week standing: 1
Fournette had flat out his worst game on any level this past weekend, only putting up 31 yards on 19 carries. Although he did find the end zone once, he was dominated by the Alabama defense. What didn’t help Fournette is that Derrick Henry, the second best running back in college football, had another good performance.
So why is Fournette still number one? There is very little a running back can do when the other defense is sending seven or eight guys on a blitz every play. LSU’s pass game isn’t that great and Alabama took full advantage of that by sending the dogs after Fournette. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t the best running back in college football, and I doubt that he’ll have another game like he did last week.
Fournette and the Tigers look to get back on track as they take on Arkansas this week.
Derrick Henry (RB, Alabama)
Stats: 1,254 yards on 5.8 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns.
Last week standing: Not mentioned
Henry continued his hot streak again this week by running the ball 38 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns. What really makes a case for Henry winning the Heisman is that the other running back contender was shut down and happens to be number one right now. Some analysts are really making a case for Henry because he is finishing the season on a hot streak and he definitely deserves some recognition for the Heisman trophy.
Henry and Alabama will take on Mississippi State next week as they hope to keep their playoff chances alive.
Corey Coleman (WR,Baylor)
Stats: 58 receptions for 1,178 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Last week standing: 3
Coleman had another outstanding game against Kansas State, where he caught the rock 11 times for 216 yards and three touchdowns. I mean what can you say about this kid, he is simply tearing it up for Baylor. It’s not often you see a wide receiver this high on the Heisman watch, but with what Coleman is doing for the Bears, it would be an insult not to put him on here.
Trevone Boykin (QB, TCU)
Stats: 233-354 for 3,372 yards and 29 touchdowns
Last week standing: 2
Boykin’s rank dropped after a not so good performance against Oklahoma State. This was the first time that Boykin actually played a pretty good defense. The senior completed 35 passes on 57 attempts for 445 yards, but threw one touchdown and four interceptions. Although Boykin had a bad game, it doesn’t mean he’s a bad quarterback by any means. He’s had a tremendous season, but sometimes it takes only one game to drop your Heisman stock and that’s just what happened to Boykin.
TCU will take on Kansas this week at noon and Boykin will look to finish the season strong against a weak opponent.
