The Longwood Lancers and Big South Player of the Week, Tristan Carey, will travel to State College this Sunday, to take on the Nittany Lions. This past week, Carey was named Big South Player of the Week and Longwood Athlete of the Week, after posting season-high numbers and leading the Lancers to two difficult wins against TCU and Mars Hill.

Carey averaged 24 points and five rebounds in two games, and scored a season-high 31 points, in the game against TCU. Carey scored 21 points in the first half of the TCU matchup and made seven of 12 three- pointers, giving the Lancers their first program win over a Big 12 member and BCS school. He scored a team-high 17 points against Mars Hill and is currently averaging 20.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in just three games this season.

The 6-foot 4, 185 pound, senior guard is a native of Colonial Beach, Virginia. Carey currently holds the leading record at his high school for career high points with, 2,481. In 2009, Carey was named District Player of the Year and The Free Lance-Star Co-Player of the Year. Carey’s 884 total points in 2009, are tied for the third highest season total in Virginia High School League history, behind Moses Malone and Allen Iverson.

Carey began his college basketball career at La Salle University, but quickly transferred to Longwood, where he sat out a remainder of 2010-2011 season, due to the NCAA Transfer rule. While at La Salle, Carrey started one of 17 games and averaged only 2.4 points.

As a sophomore, Carey began to see more playing time, as he started 27 of 31 games and averaged over 31 minutes of playing time per game. He was the team leader with 99 assists, 32 steals, and six dunks. Carey posted 20 double figure-scoring games and scored a season-high 30 points against VMI. He recorded his first career double-double against Virginia Wise, with 11 rebounds and 24 points.

Carey played the role of team captain his junior year and started all but one game for the Lancers. He averaged 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He was the team leader in points (516), scoring average, field goals, field goal attempts, three-point field goals, three-point attempts, three-point percentage, steals, and minutes played. He set a school record of 40 points in one game and eight three-point field goals in Longwood’s matchup against Liberty.

While at Longwood, Carey has recorded 932 points, 326 rebounds, 162 assists, 105 steals, and 41 blocks. He is sixth all time in Longwood history with 136 career three-point field goals. This season, Carey has already scored 60 points and been recognized for his standout skills.

Carey is a member of a large sports family. Carey’s cousins Torrey Smith (Baltimore Ravens) and Jermon Bushrod (Chicago Bears) play in the NFL and Joe Posey (JMU) and Chris Johnson (LSU) played Division I basketball.

Head coach Jayson Gee expects Carey to put up big numbers during his final year at Longwood and anticipates Carey will continue to play a large impact for the Lancers this year.

Carey and the 2-1 Lancers will visit the Bryce Jordan Center this Sunday, at 1:00 p.m.
