UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Presidential candidate and Texas native Beto O’Rourke visited Penn State and spoke to students in the HUB about his campaign for the White House Tuesday.

O’Rourke said he admired the support that he received from the university.

“This sort of kindness and welcome, it is the kind of respect that we give one another that I would love to see in our national politics going forward,” O'Rourke said.

Pranoy Bharadwaj, a Dallas resident, said he was quite glad to see one of his compatriots.

“I feel proud to be a Texan and see a fellow Texan come to Penn State,” Bharadwaj (freshman, biochemistry/molecular biology) said. “It feels lonely here sometimes but getting an influential figure like Beto come in and open up his policies…I’m proud of him for coming here.”

Senior political science and history major Hannah Magoveny said she was delighted when she learned that O’Rourke was visiting.

“I was excited because I followed his Senate race against Ted Cruz,” Magoveny said. “I was in my friend’s apartment…and I literally got up on the couch and said, ‘Beto’s coming?!’ and I got so excited.”

O’Rourke is only one candidate in a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls for the 2020 election. He has raised nearly $6 million dollars in individual donations only days after his campaign announcement.
