Lady Lions Top Iowa to Continue Conference Lead

After a slow start, the Penn State Lady Lions defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, 81-69, Thursday at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

Both teams could not gather a rhythm of offense to start the game. In the first half each team committed 11 turnovers. Penn State was able to stay in the game because Iowa only scored six points over the turnovers.

About six minutes into the first half, Penn State found themselves down by five points. They were able to come back and have a small halftime lead, 37-34.

Penn State could only score seven points off of the 11 turnovers they forced.

Three minutes into the second half, junior guard/forward Ariel Edwards had two layups that sparked the offense charge for Penn State.

Edwards, who averages 7.6 points per game this season, had 15 points, while the Lady Lions were lead by junior guard Maggie Lucas who had 21 points.

It was also a beneficial to the start of the second half that the Lady Lions did not allow Iowa to score their 40th point until 4:19 into the half. Furthermore, the team only committed five turnovers in the second half.

The Hawkeyes were still plagued in the second half by turnovers, committing nine and giving the Lady Lions 11 points off of turnovers. On the night, Penn State had 18 points off of turnovers, while Iowa only had 10 points.

Iowa was lead by senior center Morgan Johnson who had 17 points on the night. She is the team's leading scorer and averages 15.1 points per game.

The Lady Lions next game is against Illinois at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 20 at the BJC.
