Hobey Baker Watch: Week 17
Another week of college hockey means another edition of the Hobey Baker Watch. We’re just 70 days away until the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee announces the recipient. In this week’s watch, let's discuss potential defensemen who could win the prestigious award.
David Farrance, Boston University
The Nashville Predators’ 2017 third-round pick has developed nicely during his time at Boston University. In his junior year, Farrance has posted 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points. Farrance anchors the power-play unit, as he leads the Terriers with eight such goals. The young defenseman exemplifies the role of a two-way defender. He’s creative offensively and has plenty of defensive grit. Farrance is definitely a young player to keep an eye on.
Scott Perunovich, Minnesota Duluth
Perunovich has changed the narrative tied to the small defensemen. At just 5 feet 10 inches, the junior has produced four goals and 24 assists for 28 points. Perunovich makes up for size with his elusive skating and his eye for open teammates or an open net. Perunovich decided to return to Minnesota Duluth in its quest to win three straight national championships. St. Louis Blues fans should pay attention to the development of their second-round pick in the 2018 NHL draft.
Mike Lee, Sacred Heart
The once-transfer from Vermont is having a stellar senior year for Sacred Heart. Lee has proven to the college hockey world that he is one of the best players. Just look at his plus/minus rating. Lee leads the NCAA in that category with a plus-27. He’s also tallied four goals and 24 assists for 28 points. An upperclassman who excels with or without the puck on his stick, Lee has been a key reason why Sacred Heart ranks 20th in the USCHO Top 20 poll.
