Around the Premier League: Matchweek 3

Story posted August 30, 2023 in CommRadio, Sports by Ben Palillo

This past weekend was another action-packed affair for the Premier League.

Rodri’s late strike lifting Manchester City over Sheffield United, Sasa Kalajdzic 87th minute header leading Wolverhampton over Everton and Erling Haaland winning the PFA Player of the Year award were among the top storylines from this past weekend.

Here's a deeper look into these top storylines from soccer’s top league.

Rodri’s late goal lifts Manchester City over Sheffield United

Manchester City got quite the scare on Sunday when they traveled to take on newly promoted Sheffield United.

The blue and white pressured Wes Foderingham early and often, but the combination of the goalpost and Foderingham’s fantastic keeping kept Manchester City off the board.

Then, the most lethal goal scorer in the Premier League struck.

In the 63rd minute, Jack Grealish slowly dribbled the ball into the box before sending a cheeky cross toward the back post that Haaland headed in to break the deadlock.

Manchester City continued to push the pace offensively but could not get that insurance goal, and in the 85th minute, Sheffield United made them pay.

Following a botched clearance attempt from Kyle Walker, Jayden Bogle pounced on a loose ball and sent a curling shot through a crowd of bodies and into the bottom left corner.

The blue and white then showed why they are one of the top clubs in the world, as in the 88th minute, they silenced an electric Bramall Lane.

Rodri stepped up to corral a loose ball that deflected off Grealish and sent a beautiful shot into the top left corner to secure Manchester City the three points.

Manchester City will look to continue their undefeated start when they host Fulham on Saturday.

Sheffield United will look to grab their first points of the season when they host Everton on the same day.

Kalajdzic’s 87th-minute header leads Wolverhampton over Everton

Everton hosted Wolverhampton in a battle between clubs looking to secure their first points of the campaign.

The goalkeepers stole the show throughout the match and stymied the limited opportunities from each side, but just when the game seemed destined to end scoreless, Kalajdzic struck.

In the 87th minute, Pedro Neto made a magnificent run down the right wing before sending a long cross into the six-yard box that Kalajdzic managed to flick on and in to provide the Wolves a lead they would never relinquish.

Wolverhampton will look to capture another three points on Sunday when they travel to take on Crystal Palace, while Everton will try to bounce back when they travel to take on Sheffield United.

Haaland was named the PFA Player of the Year

Manchester City’s superstar striker added another trophy to his collection.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Professional Footballer’s Association named Haaland the Player of the Year.

This comes off the back of arguably the most dominant season a player has ever had.

Haaland scored 52 goals in 53 matches across all competitions while helping Manchester City capture the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
