UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ali Krieger, a member of the United States women’s national soccer team, came back to where her journey began this weekend at Penn State.

Her speech about overcoming her athletic struggles brought in many students eager to hear what she had to say.

Penn State Ph.D. student Xiaijing Yang helped work the event. She said that she knew the speech would attract many Penn State students.

“It’s kind of what we expected,” Yang said.

Krieger talked about how she overcame several athletic injuries and how her motivational drive and work ethic got her to where she is today.

Many Penn State students said they found her advice helpful, especially sophomore Niswana Risal. Risal said that she took notes during the speech.

“The five pillars—I took note of that in my phone,” Risal said. “This is going to help me in my future even though I’m not pursuing sports.”

According to Risal, the five pillars that Krieger mentioned were her best pieces of advice. These pillars include being present in the moment, focusing on effective communication, being accountable for yourself, surrounding yourself with influential people, and finding happiness from within.

Krieger said that she applies these five pillars to her everyday life, and that they’ve helped her in the past and they currently help her to become the best at what she is participating in.

Penn State’s Student Programming Association sponsored the event.
